Jmail Overview

In January 2005 the college switched to a new email server.  This new server provides additional configurations options for both users and the email administrator.  Please take a moment to read this page and some of the other help pages.  You will need to change some of the default setting to take full advantage of these settings.

You will still be able to read your email using your current email program.  The most common of these are Mozilla Thunderbird , Nestcape Messenger, Outlook Express and the Web Client which is available from any internet connected computer.

New Features
  • Virus Checking - All mail messages are checked for viruses. Infected messages are rejected.
  • Attachment Blocking - Attached files with extensions that are normaly viruses are rejected. Click here for a list of blocked attachment types.
  • Spam Checking - All mail messages receive a spam rating. You may reject spam if the rating is high. Click here for details.
  • Archiving - Mail can automatically be deleted/moved from the trash or any other mailbox if it is older than a predetermined time. Click here for details.
  • Improved Vacation message - Click here for details.
  • Improved Security - User IDs and passwords can now be encrypted when they are transmitted over the internet.
  • Server Level Filters - Message filters can be setup to deal with your mail as it comes into the server. These filters will process your mail no matter if you are reading your mail at work, at home or on the road. Click here for details.
  • IsSpam address - Spam email can be forwarded to isspam@jmail.umd.edu so that it will recieve a higher spam rating the next time a similiar message is received.

* Note: Differences between jmail and ajr accounts.
