Q. How do I view an overview of SPAM settings?

A.  There is no magic bullet that will get rid of all SPAM.  The server does have spam filters that will try to detect SPAM.  New filters can be added by the administrator to continue to combat SPAM.

The email server assigns each incoming message a SPAM score.  This score is usually a number between 0 and 10.  The higher the spam score the more likely the message is SPAM.  You can set your email account to take certain actions depending on the SPAM score.  The default server setting is to add SPAM ******* to the subject line of the message if the SPAM score is 5 or greater.  Other actions that can be taken depending on the SPAM score are hold, bounce or vanish.

A setting of HOLD will keep the message  for 2 weeks, in which time you can view it and choose to receive it, delete it or let it expire after 2 weeks.

A setting of BOUNCE will send a message back to the sender, letting them know you didn’t get it.

A setting of VANISH will throw the message away; sender will not know you didn’t get it.

A log can be setup to view what action was taken on a message.  If a message that you want to receive is being flagged as SPAM, you can setup an exception rule that will allow you to receive the message.

I recommend that you initially make your default settings to
HOLD messages with a score of 7 or greater
and to
BOUNCE messages with a score of 10 or greater.

You will need to check your held messages every so often to see what messages are being held.  If needed, add exception rules to allow held messages to be delivered to you inbox.  Once you are confident that are messages held are indeed SPAM, change your SPAM settings to
HOLD messages with a score of 6 or greater
and to
BOUNCE messages with a score of 7 or greater.

You will now start the whole process over.  Keep lowering the HOLD value until to many valid messages are being marked as SPAM.
